Young educated beauty Fancy Day (Keeley Hawes) comes to town to teach school and care for ailing father. Soon gossip around town turns to who Miss Day will marry. The lead contender is wealthy Mr. Shiner (Steve Pemberton). Fancy however has also caught the attention of poor Dick Dewy (James Murray) and the Parson Maybold (Ben Miles). Poor Fancy is also caught in the middle of a feud between the Parson and the former church choir when the Parson introduces a harmonium to provide the church music effectively usurping the choir and asks Fancy to play.

Η νεαρή μορφωμένη και όμορφη Φάνσυ Ντέϊ (Keeley Hawes) έρχεται στην πόλη για να διδάξει στο σχολείο και να φροντίσει τον άρρωστο πατέρα της.Σύντομα διαδίδονται σχόλια στην πόλη για το ποιόν θα παντρευτεί η δεσποινίς Ντέϊ.Ο προεξέχων υποψήφιος είναι ο πλούσιος κύριος Σάϊναρ (Steve Pemberton) .Η Φάνσυ ωστόσο έχει κιόλας τραβήξει την προσοχή του φτωχού Ντικ Ντιούι (James Murray)  και του εφημέριου Μέϊμπολντ (Ben Miles).
Η Φάνσυ επίσης γίνεται το επίκεντρο μιας έριδας μεταξύ του εφημέριου και της προηγούμενης χορωδίας της εκκλησίας,όταν ο εφημέριος παρουσιάζει ένα αρμόνιο για να προσφέρει στην εκκλησία πιο έντονη μουσική,διώχνοντας την χορωδία και ζητά απ’την Φάνσυ να παίξει.
