Marty McFly (Fox) reist terug naar 1955 met een tot tijdmachine omgebouwde DeLorean van Doc Emmett Brown (Lloyd). Hij zorgt er per ongeluk voor dat zijn moeder verliefd op hem wordt in plaats van op zijn vader. Om ervoor te zorgen dat hij nog geboren zal worden, moet hij ze weer verliefd op elkaar laten worden. Ondertussen moet hij ook nog met hulp van de Doc. Emmett Brown uit 1955 een weg terug naar de toekomst vinden.

In dit langverwachte vervolg moet Marty met Doc Brown naar de toekomst reizen om zijn toekomstige zoon uit de problemen te helpen. Zonder dat ze het weten 'leent' Marty's aartsrivaal Biff Tannen de tijdmachine om een kalender met sportuitslagen naar zijn vroegere ik in 1955 te brengen. Als Marty er in het heden achterkomt dat Biff met gokken een fortuin heeft vergaard, moet hij terug naar 1955 om de zaken weer recht te zetten.

Marty McFly has only just got back from the past, when he is once again picked up by Dr. Emmett Brown and sent through time to the future. Marty's job in the future is to pose as his son to prevent him being thrown in prison. Unfortunately, things get worse when the future changes the present.

Doc Brown is in 1885 gestrand en Marty gaat weer terug in de tijd om hem te redden. Helaas raakt de benzine van de DeLorean op en moeten ze een andere manier verzinnen om terug naar de toekomst te komen. Hierbij worden ze gehinderd door een voorouder van Biff Tannen, die op het leven van Doc Brown uit is.

Stranded in 1955, Marty McFly receives written word from his friend, Doctor Emmett Brown, as to where can be found the DeLorean time machine. However, an unfortunate discovery prompts Marty to go to his friend's aid. Using the time machine, Marty travels to the old west where his friend has run afoul of a gang of thugs and has fallen in love with a local schoolteacher. Using the technology from the time, Marty and Emmett devise one last chance to send the two of them back to the future.
