 I recently switched from my shared hosting to a virtual private server, and saw that it's quite hard to find good information about setting up a lightweight (using Lighttpd instead of Apache) Linux server.


To help everyone who wants switch to a (virtual private) server, I wrote this guide. It explains how to setup a server with


- Lighttpd, PHP5 and MySQL,

- Google apps for domain e-mail, and PHP(mail) working (with the lightweight msmtp),

- IPTables firewall and securing SSH access,

- Some basic optimization things like etags


I also included Putty (free SSH client) in the torrent. You only need it if you are running Windows.
