Description
So I got a free EEE PC from my bank for switching accounts and jazz...and as great as Xandros is...it is lacking in comfortibility that my girlfriend requires (and later you will find out some other reasons for why I need windows)
Basically, Bell (my isp\'s isp) is lame...to an extreme sense, they throttle me super hard (a combined 30kb/sec on torrents available) So I have been led to find alternatives, I have rslinks and jdownloader and other ways like that but its still not good enough. My school (as dumb as they are) has a network setup that will allow any computer that is wired in to get an ip address...this ip address allows for 20mbps downloads...and 10mbps uploads...i salivate at the idea of downloading torrents at maximum speed.
I happen to have this eeepc and a 120 gig external usb drive... all I have to do is setup a system to download torrents right to the drive and I can bypass this communism that bell evokes on me.
My initial install of xp ...well was too big as I only have a 2G surf and am very limited on space. So I looked into TinyXP and as promising as it sounded I couldn\'t get it to boot off of usb (as it is not a true xp iso when its compiled through nlite)
Finally I have just broke down and made my own TinyXP that can and will boot from usb and install leaving you with a 640mb install before hotfixes... leaving you (on a 2g Surf) with 1.3gigs of space to play around with. Which is more than enough to load firefox, utorrent and vlc and some other goodies
I decided that these 2 days of work warranted me sharing all my methods and tools in a handy dandy torrent with a full walkthrough on how to do it...cause I\'m a nice guy like that
So without further a due:
1. Mount ISO in the ISO folder of this Torrent
2. In the Tools folder of this Torrent you will see a usb_prep8 folder, go into it and double click on usb_prep8.cmd
3. This will open a tool called PE to USB and a command prompt (dos looking window)
4. Select your usb key in the drop down menu and make sure that \"Quick format\" and \"Enable LBA\" and \"Enable Disk Format\" are all checked
5. Click Start
6. It should only take a few seconds to format the drive (you need atleast a gig stick for this process)
7. Now that that is done the command prompt window will change and show you a menu, minimize (DONT CLOSE) this for now
8. Start>Run: cmd [enter]
9. Go into the tools folder in this new command prompt window you opened and go into the bootsect folder
10. run this command: bootsect.ext /nt52 X: (where X: is the letter of your drive)
11. Close this command window
12. Maximize that other command window we minimized earlier and you will see a menu, first you want to press 1 and enter and point it to where you have the ISO mounted
13. You can leave 2 alone as long as T: isn\'t mounted as some other drive on your system, if it is then just change it to something else
14. Press 3 and enter and type in the letter of your USB flash (no : is nessicary)
15. Momment of truth, press 4 and enter, it will ask you a bunch of yes or no questions and your answer to all of them should be yes
16 The whole process will take about 20 to 30 min depending on your system and once that is done go place the newly prepped usb flash in the left hand side usb port (this is more important than you might think as the left hand side port is the only one used pre-windows install)
17.Turn your EEEPC on and press esc until a blue boot menu pops up
18. Boot from your USB Flash drive (should be obvious wich one on the menu it is)
19. A new menu will appear moments later asking you for txt or gui install, first you want the text install
20. This is a standard text install at this point, let it do its thing.
21. When the system is ready to reboot make sure you are there to press esc again after it restarts and boot from the usb flash as it is not completely done the
install yet. Only this time you want to select GUI install instead
22. Again standard install, the serial is: JD3T2-QH36R-X7W2W-7R3XT-DVRPQ
23. You will then restart and press esc one more time and select gui mode as windows xp needs the flash for a little post install cleanup.
24. That\'s it, you now have windows XP installed with a minimal footprint on your Asus EEE PC without using an external cdrom drive, go pat yourself on the back
25. Install the drivers located in the Driver folder in this Torrent
26. Enjoy :)
I\'m pretty bored, so I will be fully supporting this, so if something doesn\'t work I will do my best to help you out, just leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
