A gang of outlaws lead by Link (Bronson) and Gauche (Delon) rob a train of its money. The Japanese ambassador is also travelling on the train, with a gift of a valuable gold sword for the U.S. president. The outlaws steal the sword too. Gauche betrays Link, taking the money and the sword. Link and the ambassadors samurai bodyguard Kuroda (Toshiro Mifune) pursue Gauche. Link wanting the money and the samurai wanting the sword and revenge.
