Can't Read, Can't Write
On: Channel 4
Date: Monday 21st July 2008
Time: 21:00 to 22:00
Part 1 of 3
Can't Read, Can't Write is a shocking and moving series that reveals the hidden realities of Britain's adult literacy crisis. It follows on from the hugely successful RTS award-winning Lost for Words season, which addressed the problems of literacy in schools.
In this first episode, award-winning teacher Phil Beadle (The Unteachables) takes on the task of teaching nine adults how to read and write. Each one of them spent over 10 years in the school system – and yet they failed to learn the most basic skills. The class includes a whole range of people who left school unable to read: a businessman, a plumber, a single mum and an unemployed 21-year-old.
