Billy Klippert-Naked And The Simple Truth -2006-320 Kbps
Genre:AOR/Hard Rock/Melodic Rock
Tracklist:
1.Naked & The Simple Truth2.Involved3.Jenny4.She Comes In Waves5.Overload6.Everything To Lose7.Hold On8.Going Under9.Killing Me10.Katie11.Wretched Thing
The first album from Canadian Idol runner up Billy Klippert felt more like a puzzle of pieces taken from varied directions but it still was a real good modern hardrock album.
Billy co-wrote 6 songs on his debut with Harry Hess of Harem Scarem producing it, the album also featured 4 covers of Elton John?s "Levon", Harem Scarem?s "Waited", Harry Hess solo album track "Just another day" and Pete Lesperance solo track "Scars".
On his new album "Naked and the simple truth", the Harem Scarem vibes are still all over it but this time the album feels more like a complete effort instead of songs taken from all kinds of places.
Producer Matt DeMatteo (Danko Jones, Big Wreck, Mobile) knows that Billy is a rocker at heart and won?t let his songs get vanished in a labyrinth of mainstream pop.
There?s a good variety of midtempo radio ready songs, ballads and upbeat hardrocking tracks on this album - it never feels boring to listen to and the new single "Going under" is just excellent where my thoughts go to Robbie Williams "Advertising space" but with a heavier approach ofcourse.
Straight ahead rockers like "Involved" and "Hold on" sure could be featured on the upcoming Harem Scarem album, and I can?t recall any song as hardhitting as "Wretched thing" on his debut.
Klippert is going in the right direction for sure!

Madison-Best In Show -1986- 256 Kbps

11. Mental Masturbation
In the 80s, many bands were kept under tight wraps in their home countries, and were not even given the opportunity to score fans in the US, even when metal was a booming viable music form on the pop/contemporary airwaves. Holland had Helloise, Germany had Skagarack, Japan had Malice, and... Madison. Madison was a harder edged AOR act that was swept under the rug, and soon fell apart shortly after a Japanese tour in support of their second album in 1987. Its no mystery why they were so overlooked, there were many reasons to explain the obscurity. They had no star power, their second release had a cover that was mostly pink with ballet slippers, obviously an odd choice for a metal band and frankly their first album was nothing extraordinary. But the fact that Goran Edman lent his vocal prowess to the band was enough to make them worthy of trying to track down a copy, and that I did, and upon first listen it was love. Their musical style was not unlike other excellent hard rock acts of the time such as the poppy lightweights Shy, Icon and Skagarack, but with a dash of the harder Helloise and Malice. "Best In Show" took the best of all these worlds, and splashed the ten full songs, and one instrumental full of colour and metallic beauty. For the few not familiar with Edman, he fronted a host of bands, ranging from most notably the axeslinger driven acts like Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum, and Nikolo Kotzev's Brazen Abbot, and lesser known bands such as Street Talk, Glory, Reingold, Johansson, Backyard Boogaloo, and more. His vocal performances are always nothing less than outstanding, full of charm, emotion and charisma and delivering each note with conviction in warm Swedish accented tones. The rest of the band is made up of relatively unknown, but very capable musicians. Conny Sundquist on bass, Anders Kalson and Mikael Myllynen provided a dual axe attack, while Peter Hredicson pounded the skins with authority.
Madison may very well be the MOST underrated, overlooked, shied away from band of all time. The trip from start to finish is simply magic. Opener "Oh Rendez Vous" is a huge AOR track with a dynamic chorus, and absolutely angelic vocals from Goran Edman, who has never sounded this good before or since. "Oh Rendez Vous" is a song that should not be missed, it being the main attraction of the album, and one of the best tunes to come out of the 80s. Listen and see for yourself. The follow up track "Carry On", drives hard with searing guitar riffs and a bubbly solo. Another spectacular chorus is the topping on the cake, and the kind that just begs for the listener to sing right along. "Can't Take It" is a typical rocker, with a swinging pace. The soulfully delicate piano enriched opening of "Drama", stabs right where it hurts, squeezing every ounce of beauty from the electric guitar, in a short, moving instrumental that serves as the opening for bittersweet ballad "Shine". Almost every metal outfit has slipped a ballad into their albums, since the day metal was born, but this one is just a little different. The presentation is gentle with a bluesy background, and swells to a lush close. "World Wide Man" revs it up again, squealing galloping guitar, screaming vocals and all. Very much a typical rocker, but the energetic pacing is gripping and party induced. Speaking of parties... "Hotel Party" is another bouncy rocker, with a very unconventional musical 'break' in the center, surprise, the song turns into pure jazz for a few seconds before switching back to growling guitars and soaring vocals. "Mental Masturbation" is actually a another solid hard rock song, musically but is amusing to listen to, obviously, since the title is cried out loudly during the chorus many times.
Madison was a band that folded before fame had a chance of coming their way, their strong songwriting, and heartfelt performances have touched the few that had the opportunity of hearing this magnificent hard rock record. Unfortunately I have only heard 9 out of 11 songs, but what I have been blessed to hear, I hold very dear and close to my heart. "Best In Show" is truly a beautiful record, and one that is more than worthy of classic status. Its worth every second spent searching for it. I would like to thank the people that without them, this review would never have been made, and those that aided me in my quest for "Best In Show": Rick, Anwer, Pat, Raef for the cover image, and last but definitely not least, PJ, for introducing me to this wonderful band, and so many others. All have been greatly appreciated. And to Madison, 'May the memory of you shine... never fade away...'

In 1993 Guitarist MISHA CALVIN released his best album ever titled 'Evolution'. 5 years later he released his third and final CD, which is also the third CD re-released through MAJESTIC ROCK RECORDS (again with a few unreleased bonustracks). Musically Misha holds on to that classic melodic hardrocksound of the 1970s and 1980s (RAINBOW meets WHITESNAKE), but vocally this time no IAN PARRY or TONY MARTIN, but a certain Marthy Smith. He isn't a bad singer at all (bit raw, DIOish, not as good of course), but can not compete with the likes of Ian and Tony. The songs are nice, but are also not as good as that 1993 debut, but here and there we can find some nice melodic rocksongs like "Do it again", "Say my name", "Falling into you" (bit FOREIGNERish) and "Let your heartbeat show the way". Another fine MISHA CALVIN re-release, although I do hope we can soon welcome a real new CD of Misha, with songs that can compete with his 1993 debut, because that record remains his best release so far.
Points 8.0 Out Of 10.0

I still remember when I heard the first two songs off this album that were released: "First Love" (the radio ballad) and "Mine Field". When I heard "First Love" (side one of the promo tape) I thought, "well, there's the radio ballad!" and when I heard "Mine Field" (side two) I thought, "WOOOOOOOOWWWWWW! THE ROCK BAND IS BACK!" This album is definitely more guitar-oriented than the two just before. An old CCM review of this album says that the first two songs are "possibly the most exciting eight minutes Petra has ever put to tape", and I would agree, and even include "Mine Field" (the next 4½ minutes) in that estimate. You can read Petra's own comments on the songs from the promo cassette liner above, but I'd like to quote you a little of "Mine Field": "Smell the burning powder, there's danger in the air; a voice from deep inside is telling you, `you must beware'; the enemy is watching every step you take, to find his opportunity in every choice you make. And it's no game when someone lives without His grace, and who's to blame when it blows up in their face? It's a mine field—you'd better follow Him through; God knows the way, you'd better stick like glue. It's a mine field—you'd better stay on His heels, 'cause the enemy kills and the enemy steals. So keep your head down and keep your eyes peeled, 'cause life is a mine field." This is a rockin' album without a doubt.

If someone saw the names that have taken part in Radiactive "Taken" album, probably he would expect to hear one of the best Aor/Melodic Hard Rock albums of the last years!...Having listened to the album, I can't claim this, as it seems that the amount of the names that take part in it unfortunately wasn't enough to bring such a result...
Names such as: Jeff Porcaro (Toto), Steve Porcaro (Toto), Neal Schon (Journey,Bad English, Hardline, etc.), Bruce Kulick (Blackjack, Good Rats, Michael Bolton, Kiss, etc.), Andreas Carlsson (συνθ?της σε Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, etc.), Yngwie J, Malmsteen, Robin Beck, James Christian (House of Lords), Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), Gary Barden (MSG), Jim Peterik (Survivor), Michael Landau (Richard Marx, Chicago, Michael Bolton), Johan Fahlberg (Jaded Heart), Tom Saviano (Peter Criss, Earth Wind & Fire, Ray Charles) Michael Thompson (Shania Twain, Faith Hill)...,and the list goes on!..
Nevertheless, what everyone should expect from swedish Tommy Denander's new project "Radioactive" and the album "Taken" is a pretty good Aor/Melodic Hard Rock album! Firstly, composer Andreas Carlsson makes his debut on vocals in the fantastic "Stronger than Yesterday" and surprises us!!! The well-known composer is obviously multi-talented! Listen to his voice and see for yourself! Songs that also stand out are the melodic "Premonition" in which we can hear Bruce Kulick on guitar solo, the "catchy" and probably best of the album "Shattered" - in the solo of which Mr. Malmsteen "exagerrates" as usual and as a result we have a rather irrelevant to the whole melody and unecessary solo - and the wonderful "Love Is On Your Mind". Of couse this doesn't mean that you can't listen pleasantly to the rest of the album as well!..
There is also an interesting duet of James Christian (House Of Lords) and his wife Robin Beck, the "Easy's Getting Harder". This one promises enjoyable performances accompanied by the magic sounds of Tommy Denander's guitar (that here reminds me of Neal Schon!) and all these push the song to become something more than just a good song.
Generally, the Radioactive's "Taken" is a very good Aor album, which Aor/Melodic Hard Rock lovers all over the world should listen!...

Review:
Star Star is a band that has often been accused of being too punk for rock fans, and too rock for punk fans, and therefore seemed to fall through the cracks of commercial stardom. The Love Drag Years was the bands second release, but first to get wider distribution. Standout tracks include the jamming "Fly Boy", "Cowboys In Space", "Groovy Guru Gangster Girl", "Diggy Dragster" and a cover of the obscure Alice Cooper classic "Nervous".
While the band wears its glam influences such as Cooper and the New York Dolls on its sleeve, the music itself sounds like a punkier version of Faster Pussycat. The Love Drag Years was pretty good and received rave reviews among the music press, and I also give it two thumbs up! Check out the band for yourself at starfuckerstar.com.
