It's a shame Paul Eddington and Nigel Hawthorne aren't around for this look back at the standout British sitcom of the 1980s, but their spirits hover over it. Co-writer Jonathan Lynn recalls how Eddington, playing clueless politician Jim Hacker, would say he could do without certain lines in the script and get the idea across with his expression; when they discovered he was right, and able to convey whole sequences of emotions with his face, they added jokes with the proviso that Eddington needn't say them if he preferred to act them. The clips illustrate how well this worked. But for all Eddington's brilliance it was Hawthorne who won the Baftas. Year after year they were both nominated but each time, to the embarrassment of both, Hawthorne won. We're reminded of an irony, too: co-writer Antony Jay kept quiet about it at the time, but while satirising Whitehall in the sitcom he was also busy writing party political broadcasts for the Tories - poacher and gamekeeper combined.
