In this instalment of the thought-provoking series made to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the end of the First World War, we look at life on the home front during the conflict. 

It wasn’t just men on the front line who suffered during the Great War. At home the families left behind lived through zeppelin raids, food shortages and with the constant worry that their husbands, sons and brothers would not return. With the arrival of the dreaded telegram announcing the death of a loved one, the lives of thousands of families changed forever. 

At the heart of the series is powerful first person testimony of the Western Front and the Home Front in Britain. We see and hear dramatic stories from soldiers, airmen, POWs, the wounded, nurses, munitions workers, sweethearts and children. Their experience provides a unique insight into the extraordinary twists and turns of the war as the euphoria of 1914 turned into a grim struggle for survival by 1918.
